What are some concerns when building or maintaining a pool?

Every project has it’s unique needs, but it all comes down to ensuring your pool and pool equipment performs as designed.

Here is a partial checklist of items to keep in mind.

  • Are, construction signs visible from the street before gunite?
  • Is pool and/or spa located in the right place, according to approved plot plans?
  • Are all existing structures, walls and relevant characteristics adjacent to pool, spa or hot tub area sound?
  • Are there overhead utilities near the pool area?
  • Are required setbacks met?
  • Is pool equipment and deck equipment situated properly?
  • Is rebar installed per approved structural plans, design standards, or other specs like reinforcing steel schedule & details?
  • Is your pool or spa gunite, poured concrete, prefabricated, fiberglass, etc.?
  • Has soil engineer been consulted, if necessary?
  • Was brass conduit or other approved material installed for pool light?
  • Is bonding of pool light steel reinforcement correct, with #8 solid copper wire, bonding from pool reinforcement and continuous back to pool equipment location correct?
  • Has all piping that will be covered by gunite in pool area been checked?
  • Pre-plaster, has pool enclosure requirements been met for height and locations?
  • Are horizontal and vertical openings correct within fence?
  • Are all gates into the pool enclosure self-closing and self-latching, if required, with latch on the inside of the gate, opening outwards from the pool
    area?
  • Are doors from garage leading into the pool area self-closing and latching?
  • Do doors leading from the house have approved door/pool alarm(s) or an approved pool/spa cover with a permanent tag showing its listing information?
  • Are all underground electric conduits checked and approved?
  • Is all underground plumbing and gas piping correct?
  • Does no gas piping run under any structure, per UPC section 1211.4?
  • Is p-trap drain from pool equipment properly connected to sewer system?
  • Has all deck rebar been checked, if present?
  • Have all metal parts within 5 feet of the pool or spa been bonded?
  • Is the location of all equipment, panel, motors, pumps, blowers, heaters, covers, and associated wiring correct?
  • Are pool lights and wiring, GFI, and junction box checked for height above max water level?
  • Is sufficient drainage around pool provided?
  • Has a final gas test been made and all plumbing and UV Protection checked?
  • Has all pool equipment been checked?
  • Are Pool and/or Spa covers intact, if present?
  • Is the pool and/or spa enclosure intact?
  • Has all electrical wiring for pool equipment been checked?
  • Are required GFCI(s) for pool equipment installed and working properly?
